California Poppys

A person needs to stop and smell the poppys (California Poppys). Poppys enroute to the famous Hooper Peak........ which we didn't quite get to this time. Let's just say a person must savor their marriage before scaling any peaks with their wife.

Weekends are for playing

Last week Sandi and I took some friends of ours to a place about 50 miles from here called Lyons Ranch. High prairie type of environment that is now owned by the National Park Service. In the spring there are always new flowers in bloom. It is a separate biome very much different, but so close to the coastal biome, so it's easy for us to really appreciate it. We stopped to admire the purple Lupine flowers and the scent almost knocked us down as it was so aromatic and overwhelming.

Anyway, that was last week; this week our destination is called 'Hooper Peak.' Andrew and I did the hike a couple of years ago and we were so impressed we named the place. It's the peak that you see when you look over the top of Sanger Lake.

Just copy and paste the link below for a short visit into our experience.

176 miles EV vrs. Ford PU

The first week of a number figure to compare.
In the last week I drove the ZAP Xebra PK 176 miles. If I had driven my PU that distance at 13 miles to the gallon I would have used 13.5 gallons of gas at a cost of $3.53 per gallon (in Crescent City).
Gas: $3.53 X 13.5 = $47.79 Electric cost: 176 (miles) X $.03 per mile = $5.28

Tesla, here I come.

Paradigm Shift (The Real Thing)

For better or worse, here's proof that the ZAP (Zero Air Pollution) car is in Crescent City. It was delivered last night about 11:00. Sandi and I took it to Safeway this morning. The looks and stares have only begun.

Since I'm not sure what the status of the batteries were, it's hard to gauge its performance. What I can say is that it got up to about 38 mph and there is a definite decrease in acceleration and speed as the the batteries lose their charge. But, it's fun to drive, and yes, it only has three wheels.

At this time, it has the highest rated speed (40 mph) capability of EVs (Electrical Vehicles). There are other makes out there, but they are limited to 25 mph since they do not have the safety features (25 mph crash tests, 5 mph bumper, air bags) that are required in the US, and thus are considered NEVs (Neighborhood Electric Vehicles). Of course this is a 'gas challenged' vehicle but does have the mpg equivalent of 135 mpg. And, as the price of gas goes up and electrical rates remain stable (since it is much more difficult to raise rates) the mpg equivalent goes up.

No, it cannot be used on trips other than around town. No, it cannot go on the freeway. Yes, it does answer many people's needs for commuting since 80% of the miles we drive as a nation are within 25 miles of our home. For optimal battery performance it should be charged up each evening in a standard 110v outlet at a cost of about 2 cents per mile. Also, the ads show it with a solar panel, but the company charges $1,800 for it and I found it online for about $900. So, that is my next acquisition.

I don't like bumperstickers, but I thought of a good one in case I ever do relinquish and put one on. 'When I grow up I want to be a Tesla.' The Tesla is the all electric sports car coming out designed by Lotus that is capable of doing 160 mph, 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds, and with a range of 200+ miles. Of course it has a cost of $92,000. I know, this ZAP will have to do a lot of growing to do, but, it's a start.

We Must Post for Glenda

Glenda wanted to keep her exercise program secret until the resunion, but she doesn't post to the blog so we have to do it for her.

We just found out that Peter and Karissa and kids are fairly sure they will be in the area at the time of the reunion and are planning on coming. So all you parents start your nagging now. Signed, Chuck

What has everybody been up to?

Well i have had a couple of busy weeks.
Last week i spent 4 days in central valley in California.
Placerville, Foothills, Jamestown, Angles Rest, very beautiful area. Then I had to go to Modesto, and Turlock. I dont care for central california much at all. give me the mountains, the high desert and the coast. California is as diverse in its geography and landscape as it is its people.

Sabrina's memorial

Some time ago Karen and I asked prayer for Sabrina, our great niece, who was discovered to have a very fast growing cancer and was not expected to last long. She did pass away last week. She was eight years old. Needless to say, this was very hard on our family.

Today was her memorial. As all memorials are, it was good and it was bad. Emotionally it was very hard. On the otherhand, the memorial was a concise summery of all that Sabrina meant to our famaily. Like a parent living day in and day out with a child, it's easy to not appreciate the fact that your child will one day grow up and leave you. But later, while thumbing through the family photo albums you watch as your child grows before your eyes. Then you almost always reflect, thinking, 'I wish I would have better savored that moment'.

Let's be very careful that we not allow ourselves to miss the time we have left together. God has worked a miracle in our lives, to allow us to be together, even through all the various issues we have individually gone through. Let's not waste a moment on bitterness or unforgiveness. Let's be compassionate to one another, for God knows most of us have reasons we are the way we are. And consider this, as you well know, I am not perfect, I need to practice what I preach; but if I fail you, at least acknowledge what I am telling you is strait from the heart of God. So don't let anyone else's failure stop you from doing what is right.
Peter Sr.
