Ben - Sept. 16, 08

I talked to Ben today. I called about 3pm. I was really happy to hear his voice, it really sounded good! The difference in his voice and capability to communicate was huge. Before, his voice was very weak and he'd fall asleep in the middle of a sentence. Now he was asking me questions with a strong voice. When I was in Redding, the Doc asked him to describe his pain from 1-10, he said "about a six". I asked him how his pain level was now, he said about a 2, but sometimes a 3. As Illa said, they are trying to get him to heal up enough to move him to a care facility there in Redding.

I'm really encouraged at the condition of his spirit, the first thing he asked is, how Chuck was. I have to tell you, I really appreciate how good of a heart he has. Here is trapped in a body, not quite as tough as he is, and giving him all kinds of trouble, yet he's able to be concerned for others. PnK

I talked to Ben today about noon. Told him that I wasn't going to be down today either. There was not a room for me today either. I am first on the list for tomorrow and the gal called me about 2 ans said that there should be a room for me Wed. Which is good. Getting some stuff done here but not as much as I thought I would. But at least the house looks as if someone has been here and the place is not derelict.

I was hoping that it would rain today. Sure looked like it. At least it was cooler. The animals are better. Chubbs has gotten more medication in a row so he is doing better. The kittens are doing good. Been giving them shots and they are getting better. Lots of extra kitten type food too.

Ben was saying that he has walked out to the hall. That is good. Still no liquids yet again. Don't know what that will do for the move on Friday. Guess I will find out tomorrow or the next day. I got him a walker at the Salvation Army store last week. I have his name etched onto it so that it shouldn't sprout legs and it should go with him where ever he goes. Only paid 2 bucks for it. Better than paying several hundred even if the insurance covers part of it. This way will have it when ever needed by either of us. Should have thought to look there when I had trouble getting around. It folds up flat so that it doesn't take up that much room in the car. Every time he would get up to walk we would have to track down a walker. The nurses or PT would take it when they needed one. Now hopefully it will stay there. I will have to keep my eyes open for other things of that type that he will need later.

He sounded pretty upbeat all considered. The hospital that he is going to is pretty good. I talked to a lady that two of her grandmas went there after their surgeries and she was really pleased with the standard of care. She said that they got better care than at the hospital. That makes me feel better. It is an acute care hospital not a convalescent home which will make Ben feel better. I think he is afraid that he is going into a "Home" like the folks. Hope his stay won't be that long but it could be until the planned surgery to reconnect his intestines and colon and then for a time after that.

Well, I will know more tomorrow. So I am going to take a bath and go to bed. I am supposed to make the swing up around the kids to drop off some stuff then to Redding. So will let you know how they are doing. Good night to everyone. We love you all. Give our love to Chuck when and if you get to talk to him.

Love Ben and Illa

That's my dad. Very glad to hear things are getting better.

...And I'm not letting dad go to a "home" like grandma and grandpa... I can still smell the place when I think too hard on it. Nooooooo.

Not sure when Adam's getting shipped out again, but I can let Adam watch the kids and get them to school (there's still backup) and come over for a while to help with the house if you want mom, at least until he gets sent out again. Don't want the kids missing school.

Give me a call when you do come up this way, I'm better now, at least till the kids bring me the next cold that takes advantage of me.
